Onions are an amazing vegetable. It belongs to the Allium family as well as leek, chime and garlic.
There are hints that onions have already been known 5000 years BC. It´s origin is probably in Asia. In the times of Colonialism they have been introduced to North America with the first settlers from Europe.
Main producers are China, Mali, Japan and South Korea – nevertheless they are very easy to cultivate and grow extremely well in your back yard as well.
From the nutrient perspective onions contain lots of polyphenols, quercetin, flavonoids and anthocyanin pigments (depends on the kind of onion). These are antioxidants that help us to deal with the biochemistry of stress and inflammation. Therefore it is a preferable vegetable to fight heart and blood vessel conditions as well as high blood pressure. Moreover it is anti-inflammatory and is a great support to our body whenever we have to deal with germs.
